Co dependence most commonly occurs in relationships where one partner is either an addict or is dependent on drugs or alcohol. The hallmark characteristics are low self esteem, unstable, needy relationships, poor boundaries, lack of intimacy, and acute responsibility for others without a corresponding responsibility for self.
Counseling for Co-dependence and/or a Twelve Step program (either Co-dependents Anonymous or Alanon) can be transformational. Overcoming co-dependence is about establishing self compassion. It is about creating a self care program that motivates you to wake up in the morning. In my experience, I have found it impossible to experience a deep and satisfying relationship without first loving yourself.
In my practice, we collaborate to establish a powerfully motivating intention. Then we focus on creating specific practices that support that intention, including connecting you to your strengths so that you can lead a deeply fulfilling life.
